CN0350 Software User Guide

Overview

CN0350 provides robust and complete solution for processing charge input signals into digital code, for acceleration and shock measurements where piezoelectric sensors with charge output are used. The design solution is optimized for high precision and low cost measurement, using only two active devices, and has a total error less than 0.25% FSR after calibration over a ±10°C temperature range. The accuracy depends on the calibration.

The circuit shown in Figure 1 incorporates AD8608ARUZ OpAmp, AD7091RBRMZ 12-bit successive approximation (SAR) ADC, to create the charge output from piezoelectric sensors into digital code.

The circuit has 12 pin PMOD connector on board, which could be used for connection to a customer microprocessor or FPGA.

The CN0350 circuit note discusses the design steps needed to optimize the circuit shown in Figure 1 for a specific bandwidth including noise analysis and component selection considerations.

The performance of the circuit could be demonstrated with the use of Analog Devices SDP controller EVAL-SDP-CB1Z and SDP-to-PMOD Interposer Board SDP-PMD-IB1Z, both optional purchase items. This user guide will discuss how to use the evaluation software to collect data from the EVAL-CN0350-PMDZ Evaluation Board CN0350

    C:/Program Files/Analog Devices/CN0350/CN0350.exe

  3. The software should connect to the board automatically. If the hardware is not recognized by the PC the next window will appear, indicating that the software is waiting for proper hardware connection. If that happens perform the hardware connection procedure described in the previous section. After connecting the hardware the list in the window will populate. Choose the connected hardware and click select.

  4. Upon success, the System Status String Indicator will display SDP Board Ready to Acquire Data

Calibrating the CN0350 Board

  1. Establish a USB Connection LinkFor the calibration of CN0350 Board an adjustable amplitude and frequency low impedance output voltage source is required with sine wave output. The power supply voltage source has to be very well isolated from the circuit (the computer). To calibrate the board connect the voltage source (voltage generator) as shown on the picture below. The positive end of the voltage source is wired to the CAL input of the board. The negative end is wired to the NEG of the board. With the described configuration the board can be calibrated for various input ranges by changing the amplitude of the voltage source or the calibration capacitance. The amount of the input charge is determined by the formula Q=Ccal.Vin. On the figure 2 it is shown a calibration configuration for 1000pC at the input of the board (Vin = 1V, Ccal = 1nF). Note that on the board 1nF capacitor is populated, but you can use TP1 and TP2 to add additional capacitor in parallel to the on board capacitor.

NOTE: Keep in mind that output voltage of the charge amplifier doesn’t have to exceed the limit of the input range of the ADC. For that purpose it is not recommended to drive the output Vout of the charge amplifier more that 1V peak voltage. So for 1nF calibration capacitor don’t apply more than 1V to the input of the board (Vout = Q/C2). If you need to calibrate the system for more than 1000pC add external capacitor in parallel to C2 by using TP3 and TP4.

Figure 2.

Calibration Procedure Steps

  1. Establish a USB Connection Link.
  2. Click the Calibrate System tab.
  3. Set the low Calibration Coulombs Control equal to the coulombs that will be applied to the board during the calibration
  4. Press the Calibrate Button.
  5. A pop-up window appears. At this point apply the coulombs to the input of the board as described and click OK. If you press Cancel at this point you will exit the calibration procedure but the board will not be able to capture data properly.
  6. A second pop-up window appears. Now the input calibration coulombs have to be removed from the board. For that purpose unwire the input voltage source from the input of the board. When ready press OK. If you press Cancel the board will still be not calibrated.

Acquiring Data

Once calibrated, the board can be used to capture data from real piezoelectric sensors. The positive end of the piezoelectric sensor should be wired to POS of the board and the negative to NEG. Keep in mind that in order to demonstrate the result from the sensor as acceleration (g) you have to adjust the Sensor Sensitivity Control equal to the sensitivity of the sensor. Another method to demonstrate the functionality of the board is to use the voltage generator connected to the calibration input of the board. By changing the input voltage amplitude or by changing the calibration capacitor various inputs coulombs can be provided to the input of the board.

  1. Establish a USB Connection Link.
  2. Click the Accuire Button.

Saving Data to a Spreadsheet File

  1. Establish a USB Connection Link.
  2. Capture Data.
  3. Click the Save Data Button.

  4. Click the OK Button.
  5. Browse to the directory location where the spreadsheet file is to be saved.
  6. Name the file.
  7. Click the OK Button.
  8. Open with Notepad or similar. The saved data shows the collected data according to the chosen Graph Units Radio buttons.

The software saves the spreadsheet file as ASCII text with columns separated by tabs.
