High availability systems often employ dual feed powerdistribution to achieve redundancy and enhance systemreliability. ORing diodes join the feeds together at thepoint of load, most often using Schottky diodes for lowloss. MOSFET-based ideal diodes can be used to replaceSchottky diodes for a signifi cant reduction in powerdissipation, simplifying the thermal layout and improvingsystem effi ciency. Figure 1 shows the LTC4355 andLTC4354 combining the inputs and returns in a –48V, 5Adual feed application. This solution reduces the powerdissipation from 6W using Schottky diodes to just 1.1Wwith MOSFETs
