This application note is a guide to help users understand the function of Analog Devices iCouplers under various power supply conditions. Also discussed are the details of calculating supply current consumption and power dissipation. iCoupler products offer an alternative isolation solution to optocouplers with superior integration, performance, and power consumption characteristics. An iCoupler isolation channel consists of CMOS input and output circuits and a chipscale transformer (Figure 1). In all applications, an iCoupler is powered by two separate sources which do not share a common ground. Various scenarios must be considered during design to ensure that all powered states are understood.
