网络连接正在成为嵌入式系统和基于点到点协议的移动/便携设备的机器对机器（M2M）连接的默认方法。这些系统利用了多种数据格式和网络方法，从无线选项到全高速局域网/广域网环境。
实现这种连通性的主要方法有两种：一种是添加到现有设计的现有连接中的附加网络控制器；以及通过其微控制器和传感器子系统中的嵌入式功能将网络协议和接口结合起来。这些应用程序的关键特性之一是开发这些接口所需的软件和固件控制及其相关的开发环境。
Legacy systems
Most embedded systems that have been deployed in the field now need to be connected to a network in order to provide automated monitoring of their progress and system health. The challenge is how to bring this new functionality without having to re-qualify the whole design or， worse， change the firmware for the system and have to re-verify correct operation. The two methods that are most convenient for these current designs involve adding networking functions to an existing port on the system or adding a network adapter chip to the PCB that interfaces directly with the microcontroller.
