  This application note explains how to use the Supertex LR7 as a start-up device for an SMPS and demonstrates its many advantages compared to the conventional resistor and zener diode circuit used for this purpose. This note shows how the LR7 provides a simple start-up circuit solution for industry standard low voltage PWM ICs having start thresholds of 13.9V to 18.8V. For PWM ICs with start threshold voltages outside this range, refer to Supertex application notes AN-D25 and AN-H28.

  The circuit in Figure 1 is an off-line SMPS using the Supertex LR7 as a start-up circuit that provides the required VCC voltage for the Unitrode UC3844 PWM IC during start-up.
