The Case for Home Basestations

Femtocells have emerged as a key enabler of future communications
network development. More than a useful add-on that delivers better service
to the consumer and increased revenue to operators, they are also an
essential part of future network architectures.
The concept is simple: making a basestation cheap enough to be deployed
in high volume for residential use, connected to the core network via
broadband. This can deliver to a subscriber the same service and benefits
as a fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) offering such as voice-over-WiFi, but
using existing standard handsets.
