The Cellular or Personal Communications System (PCS) Network consists of
Mobile Subscribers that move around between multiple Base Stations and the
remaining infrastructure as shown.
All of the parts below the switch are called the Base Station System (BSS) and
consists of the CBSC and associated BTS sites.
The transcoder and mobility manager together form the CBSC and control the
base sites. Because the voice encoding format is different for the CDMA
interface and the public switch telephone network, a voice transcoder is needed
to make the language translations.
The mobility manager handles call setup and tear-down and soft and hard
handoff as the mobile hops from one site to another as it moves around.
