Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained arrhythmias encountered by clinicians and occurs in approximately 0.4%―1.0% of the general population. Its prevalence increases with age,and up to 10% of the population older than 70 years has been diagnosed with AF[1―5]. With the projected growth of the elderly population, the prevalence of AF will certainly increase. Thus the interest in the study and understanding of AF has considerably increased. There has not been an exhaustive epidemiologic study of AF in China. However, relative data in Beijing and Shanghai show that AF occurs in approximately 1.0% of the population older than 60 years.
