Motorola has achieved a new level of performance and integration with the MPC8240, addressing the need for higher compute density and lower system cost. The MPC8240 combines the power of the universally accepted PowerPC 603eTM microprocessor with a high performance memory controller and PCI bridge into a single 352-pin BGA package. The MPC8240 doesn’t stop there: It also contains many of the other
necessities to a computing sub-system such as a 2-channel flexible DMA controller, an interrupt controller, an I2O ready message unit, an Inter-IC Controller (I2C), and low skew clock drivers.
The MPC8240 further’s Motorola’s commitment and vision of the PowerPC architecture into not only desktop applications but also as an important part of the computing and networking infrastructure. Because of the high level of integration and the small footprint, the MPC8240 provides a powerful control element for network routers and switches, mass storage subsystems, network appliances, and print and imaging devices.
The PowerPC core microprocessor brings a rich set of operating systems, compilers, and development tools support.
